All Detroit Steel Wheels are custom made per your order, so there is a build time associated for all orders.
Other outside influences can also lead to varying lead times in our manufacturing process. We however are committed to manufacturing Detroit Steel Wheels domestically in the USA, and we do our very best to keep these lead times to a minimum.
Please contact the shop directly for current production times. We can be reached at 810.333.6100.
Our showroom is currently closed to the public. Our sales team and production teams are still hard at it, but we won't be able to welcome guests for the time being. Please check back on this page or call our shop if you would like additional information.
What is backspacing?
Backspacing is truly the same thing as a wheel's offset. It basically is telling us where the center of the wheel needs to be pressed and welded within the hoop. This measurement is important to ensure proper fitment.
For example: If you are planning to run a 20x8 wheel. A 20x8 measures 8" wide from bead-to-bead (where the tire seats to the wheel) and 9" overall from outside lip-to-lip. This means if you run a 4.0" backspace on a 20x8; from the wheels mounting surface (hub) the wheel will go in towards the center of the vehicle 4" and out towards the curb the remaining 5", equaling 9".
How do you measure it?
Measuring backspacing is easier than you think. Download our Measuring Guide here. Fill it out and send it to our team, and we can help you figure out the rest.
Still have questions? Give our sales team a call and they can walk you through how to fill out the form.
The short answer to this is no. Based on wheel width, there are press/weld tolerances for what backspacing we can offer on our wheels. In the catalog as well as the product pages on this website you will see what the backspace tolerances are for each wheel size.
For Example: In a 20x8 wheel we offer 3.5" backspacing to 4.75" backspacing and can move the backspacing in .5" increments. So in this case, the 20x8 offers a 3.5", 4.0" 4.5" and 4.75" backspacing.
We offer the final quarter inch increment of 4.75" or 5.75" (in the cases of our 9" wheels) to help tuck the wheel in as far as we possibly can to allow for vehicles who require a more positive offset wheel.
We encourage you to reach out to our sales team at 810.333.6100. They are experts in backspacing and can help you get the fitment your vehicle requires.
Product approximate weights based by size:
18x8: 39lbs | 18x9: 41lbs | 20x8: 44lbs | 20x9: 47lbs | 20x11: 53lbs | 22x9: 53lbs
You will want to use a trim removal tool to pop your snap-in caps out of your wheels. Our preferred tool is a nylon composite chisel that you can pick up from many hardware supply stores.
- Simply place the tool/chisel under the lip of the cap and give it a good whack. This should cause the cap to pop right out.
- DO NOT USE metal tools or screw drivers. This will both scratch your finish on your wheel as well as it could damage your cap
Center bore sizes differ based on the lug pattern of your wheel.
- 5x4.5 / 5x4.75 (Dual lug) = 3.18" center bore
- 5x5 (Single lug) & 5x5/5x5.5 (Dual) = 3.75" center bore
- 6x5.5 (Single lug) = 4.25" center bore
- 8x6.5 (Single lug) = 5.15" center bore
Detroit Steel Wheels are lug centric. The wheel is locked into place by torquing down on the lug nuts.
It is imperative that you use a 60-degree conical tapered lug nut to secure the wheel onto your vehicle. This style lug nut can be found at any local auto parts store or online through Detroit Steel Wheel Co.
If you have Detroit Steel Wheels in 18" or 20" diameter, our stainless steel trim rings will both work and look great! We hope to offer trim rings for 22" wheels soon.
Our trim rings are designed for our wheels only. They may snap-on to other OEM wheels, but we can't say for sure. Check with your wheel manufacturer for more information.
Trim Rings are manufactured here in the US specifically for Detroit Steel Wheels.
This aftermarket part is installed by press fitting them into the wheel's inside lip. A few things to take note:
- When installing your trim ring, start at the valve stem notch and work your way around the wheel.
- Trim Rings are held in by tension; this means that they take some work to get them into your wheels. A microfiber rag with a rubber mallet may be required to get them to seat fully.
- Because Trim Rings are held in by tension, they do bite into the wheel, so they will leave witness marks on both raw wheels as well as powder coat wheels.
- If the Trim Rings seem to be fitting too small or large, you can adjust that fitment by adjusting the valve stem notch. Check out this video on how to adjust Trim Ring fitment.
- Snap-in caps such as Baby Moons, Shannon Cones, Rallys etc. do not require clips.
- Dog dish/poverty style caps do require clips. Your wheels will need to be drilled, tapped, and have clips installed to accept these caps. Detroit Steel Wheel offers this service for a small fee.
Wheel clips come in 3 pieces: clip, screw, and flat washer (5 clips per wheel). The washers purpose is to keep the clip taunt to the wheel. When installing your clips, it should go: clip, washer, then screw.
That's a great question. In some cases yes. If you have an original dog dish cap measuring between 9-12" then most likely our team can drill, tap, and install wheel clips to accept your dog dish cap.
If your original cap is a snap-in/snap-over that would have used vertical clips, it probably won't work without a little modification on your part. Give our team a call and we can go over that process with you. Our team is hard at work to create an adapter that will work with these style caps. We will post to our online store as soon as that becomes available.
Finishing and applying coatings can be a very costly process. Our goal when offering a finished product to our customers is to offer the highest quality production finish available to us, at the best price possible.

At Detroit Steel Wheel Co., we utilize tier 1 automotive suppliers as our powder coaters. This allows us to create an attractive and durable finish at a great price point. Our current color offerings are:
- Gloss Black
- Low Gloss Black
- Gloss White
- Low Gloss White
- Metallic Silver
Wheels ordered in their RAW state will be just that - raw steel. They will need to be prepped/sanded before you send them to be painted or powder coated.
If you ordered the wheels from us powder coated, we have already taken care of prepping your wheels before we powder coated them.

Diamond Back Classics recommends frequent cleaning of your white walls with an abrasive cleaning pad. Also AVOID use of products such as Armor All on white walls. This can cause slight discoloration.
